Nation Wall
2019
Nation Wall integrates the excavated quarry granite stone transformed, with a playful nod to its past. Composed of beveled blocks of stone excavated from the original building site, the wall abstractly presents the Chinese characters “吉祥大廈NATION ST禮信街” from left to right, where the former location of the Nation Street intersected the building site. “吉祥大廈” was the name of the pair of residential buildings that once stood in this plot, meaning “Lucky Tower”. “禮信街” was Nation Street in Chinese, which used to separate the two buildings. The light box composed of a strata of rammed earth shines up to the heritage wall, resonating with the building’s concept of connecting its core to the power of the earth and the basement feature walls extending to the ground floor space.
